Loving God; Loving Neighbor

Bible Studies / Small Groups

We strive to provide opportunities for our congregation to grow in large groups as well as small groups.  Our larger offerings include Sunday Worship and Sunday School.  We also offer opportunities to share, learn, and grow in small groups settings.  People tend to feel more comfortable in smaller settings to explore their thoughts, ask questions, and build relationships with the other members of the group.

Highland UMC Small Group Bible Study Schedule, Spring 2012:

Highland UMC will soon be starting our spring Small Groups. Small Group ministry is a great way to grow deeper in your faith, get to know others in the church better and just have fun. It is my hope that each of you would consider attending a small group during this spring’s session, and that you will invite friends who may not attend church to come with you. A description each of the small groups offered this spring is listed below, along with group details and contact information. Please register with the leaders soon, as space is limited.

Acts of Faith Small Group:
This small group will explore the connections between our faith and the art of the theatre. We will travel to local theatres and experience well known plays that have deep spiritual under tones. We will then gather at a later evening to discuss the play and its theological significances. The dates and play descriptions are below. Please contact Keith Ritchie if you have any further questions.

Cotton Patch Gospel February 10    Baptist Theological Seminary, 3400 Brook Road, Richmond
Set in rural Georgia and billed as “the greatest story ever retold,” Cotton Patch Gospel is a musical based on “The Cotton Patch Version of the Gospel of Matthew and John” by Clarence Jordan. Tickets are $12, payable to Highland.

Lord of the Flies   February 24         Henley Street Theatre, 2106 N. Hamilton Street, Richmond
A plane crashes on a deserted island – the only survivors, a group of schoolboys. Critics have claimed this classic novel is rife with symbolism, portraying allusions to the bible and religious figures while examining human society.
Tickets are $22 online if you use the code “Martins.”           www.henleystreettheatre.org

Gods of Carnage        March 23        Barksdale Theatre at Willow Lawn
Two little boys scuffle on the playground and their progressive parents meet to sort things out in a civilized manner. By evening’s end, all hope is lost, prompting us to debate whether we have an Old Testament God of vengeance or a New Testament God of compassion and peace. Religion prompts wars just as often as it ends them.   Tickets are $32 (for group of 10 or more) payable to Highland.        www.BarksdaleRichmond.org

We will meet at the church to take the church bus (limit of 15 passengers) to the above plays. We will leave at 6:15 for a 7:30 showing of “Cotton Patch Gospel”, will leave at 6:45 for 8:00 showings of “Lord of the Flies” and “Gods of Carnage”.  We will gather for discussion about the latter two plays on February 28th and March 27th, respectively. To reserve your place for a play call the church office or email Office@highlandumchurch.net . For further information about the above plays (and others) go to www.theactsoffaith.org .

The Song Forever New: A Lenten Devotion with Charles Wesley Small Group

This small group will share a seven week Lenten journey to prepare us for Eastertide. Join us to read biblical texts and to study the hymns of Wesley as poetry that is beautiful in and of itself. There will be quiet time for meditation and prayer. This small group provides a unique opportunity to draw inspiration from the Bible and from the lyrics from our Anglican musical heritage. A discipline of study and reflection will prepare us for a journey inward and upward through Lent.

Charles Wesley was concerned about a healthy and vital relationship with God. Listen to his hymns. Meditate on the lyrics. Be in prayer for personal action as we take this pilgrimage through the 40 days of Lent. Live and Sing the Song Forever New!
